The names of all other products mentioned herein are trademarks of their respective companies. The Visual Basic VBRUN DLL libraries, used by some of the programs contained in this CD ROM, can be found in the _VBRUN directory. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Installation troubleshooting First of all you don't absolutely have to install the CD ROM browser program (search.exe). It can be invoked straight off the CD ROM, for instance by using the file manager or by using the RUN option from the FILE menu of the Program Manager. By installing the search program you will get a bit more speed, but not much, and it's going to take some space on your hard disk. NEVER EVER INSTALL THE LOOKUP PROGRAM INSIDE THE WINDOWS OR SYSTEM DIRECTORIES! If the setup program aborts with the message "THREED.VBX already in use", this means that you are running another application that also uses that library. Solution: (expecially Windows 3.1 & Windows 3.11) 1) don't run other programs while running the setup program 2) Move all .VBX files from the WINDOWS directory to the SYSTEM directory, rename the old THREED.VBX library (dated 1992) and substitute it with the one you will find in the root directory of our CD ROM (dated 1993). If the lookup program signals that "Updated THREED.VBX is required" and aborts, proceed as stated at point 2). Basic Windows applets like Notepad, Write, Paintbrush and Multimedia player are REQUIRED. This program viewer requires in particular WRITE.EXE, an applet of Windows 3.1. If you are using Windows 95, you'll want to copy WORDPAD.EXE to WRITE.EXE in the WINDOWS directory. If the required applets are not found, the search program ABORTS signaling a "file not found" error. Install all multimedia drivers required for your audio board. Video for Windows runtime can be installed by running the SETUP.EXE program from the VIDFWIN directory. Don't install Video for Windows runtime if you have Windows 95. Install it only on Windows 3.1. The CD ROM search program requires a C: hard disk unit, for its temporary files. Temporary files are stored in the C:\___TTEMP directory. The WINDOWS directory must be in system path. Never delete any file from the program's directory. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bonus files: PHOTO directory JPEG Photos courtesy of Studio Artico - photographers since 1900 All photos copyright 1993-1995 Studio Artico all rights reserved. VIDEO directory Video for Windows .AVI movie files copyright (c) 1995 CD ROM Paradise Srl all rights reserved. Can be used in your own multimedia presentations & programs. Please read the readme.txt file in that directory. WAV directory Wave files copyright (c) 1995 CD ROM Paradise Srl all rights reserved. Please the readme.txt file in that directory. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- A - ZIP file format The ZIP files on this CD ROM are compressed using ZIP 2.0 format: we used this format because it is extremely popular. At the moment, the latest version of the complete PKZIP package should be 2.04G, and can be obtained from: PKWARE, Inc. 9025 N. Deerwood Drive Brown Deer, WI 53223 USA Our CD ROM interface program is capable of decompressing the ZIP files you will find in this CD ROM indipendently, so no other program is required, but you'll want to register PKZIP anyway because it's extremely useful. Our CD ROM interface is capable of decompressing ZIP files from any disk, but won't run without Collection 4 CD ROM inserted in your CD ROM drive. The PKZIP Program is in the _PKZIP directory ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- B - The CD Shell In the root directory of the CD ROM, you will find a program SEARCH.EXE that can be used to browse files, look into compressed files and expand them. To install the program from DOS, enter the command WIN D:\SETUP where D: is the letter corresponding to your CD ROM Drive. If you prefer you can launch it via the RUN option from the Windows Program Manager, or from the FILE MANAGER. The lookup shell requires roughly 1.5 megabyte of disk space for the installation, at least 4 MB of RAM to run at an acceptable speed, Windows 3.1+ running on a 386 SX processor or better, and enough disk space for the files and program you'll be decompressing. It will refuse to allow viewing really big ZIP files, which you'll have to decompress and view at a latter time. If you like, you can run SEARCH.EXE directly off the CD ROM, without installing it (however Windows is still needed), without significant loss of speed compared with a complete installation on hard disk, expecially if you own at least a double speed CD ROM drive. B.1 - Installation Installation procedure is straightforward: after launching the Setup program with INSTALL or WIN D:INSTALL or from the RUN option in the Program Manager; when prompted by the install program, press the INSTALL button on the set-up's program window and then choose whether you want Collection4 to become a separate program group on your desktop or not. The INSTALL program will copy required files in the directory of your choice and will create icons for the WINPAR.EXE shell program and for the on-line documentation. Read the help files if you need help about the CD ROM interface shell, it's very visual and easy to use, chances are that you'll seldom need help, but it's there. B.2 HOW to use the CD ROM lookup program: Short guided tour to decompressing a program. Start the program, choose your language clicking on the appropriate flag. If CD ROM Paradise Collection is not inserted in the CD ROM drive, the program will ask you where it is, otherwise the program will automatically recognise it. You will be presented the list of the topics directories in the CD ROM, each directory containing files related to a topic. Browse through it. You'll see the description of the directory you are pointing at inside the pane on the upper right of the window. Double click on a directory name and you'll zoom into it, seeing the list of the files contained inside the directory. Double click on an archive name and you'll be able to see it's contents. Double click on a file belonging to the archive contents and, if this file is displayable or playable, you will be bailed into the appropriate Windows applet, while the search interface is temporarily minimised to give you full working space. Exit from the viewer invoked application (e.g.: Notepad for text files, the Multimedia Player for the MIDI files or animation, Paintbrush for bitmaps), and the lookup interface is given back control This of course provided you have enough disk space on C: unit, the appropriate drivers and basic system applets properly installed. To expand the file you are viewing first select the desired destination drive and directory, then click on the magnifying lens push-button. Watch the status bar reach 100% for each decompressed file, and wait for the "Zip Expanded" message. If you want to copy the archive without expanding it click on the floppy disk push-button instead. Want to exit from a window? Click on the push-button with the icon of the open door. The escape key works in the same way. Want to quit? Click on the icon with the red stop sign. Go back to the list of the directories and click on the pointing hand push- button, select a ZIP file using the file dialogue and enter the zip viewer directly, on any ZIP, not necessarily on Win Paradise CD ROM. If you have developed content information suitable for a new multimedia title please contact us via Internet e-mail: cdrom-paradise@tab.com . We are particularly interested in something not closely related to information technology itself: music, practical skills, sports, technology, etc... If you are expert enough in one field to write a very good book on the subject, please consider contacting us. We want creative people, not yet another programming gee whiz. We may not necessarily be interested in following your own path, and maybe we are not enamoured of that particular multimedia tool you considered using: We like content information and fresh ideas, we don't like canned multimedia applications. _________________________________________________________________________ C.4 If you'd like to see your shareware programs on our CD ROMs, please send your vendor disks with the needed authorizations to: CD ROM Paradise SRL P.O.
